Posted - March 27 2007 : 6:39:39 PM I recently cleaned the injectors on my stock Ty using my homemade pressurized injector cleaner system. BIG difference in how the truck runs. Reminds me of back when we use to have get togethers at my house and resolve knock issues, etc.. We cleaned injectors and used Top Engine Cleaner and smoked up the neighborhood....lol.
Well, in doing a search for some cheap injector cleaner liquid (Napa doesn't stock much of their brand) I came across an article stating that GM recommends ONLY their Top Engine Cleaner (10%) mixed with 90% unleaded gas. I know this stuff is great for carbon buildup, but.... As I continued on, I found the tech bulletin that said the same damn thing. I guess that the stuff is so powerfull, that is the reason it has to be diluted. So, this is usefull to me as I will try the mixture on the Sy soon. No offense intended, but I doubt that anyone else reading this has cleaned their injectors (on the vehicle) since they did so at my house some years back. It does make a BIG difference, especially on stock type pintle injectors. My Ty has really come to life, with less throttle. In using this, I imagine that it will clean the injectors AND any carbon buildup on the heads, pistons, valves etc.. I further imagine an oil change soon afterwards.
Oh..... DON'T pour this stuff into the gas tank.... it will kill your pump and who knows what else.
See, told ya it was useless info..

The professional units are real spendy, hence I made my own.
If you are gonna attend Sam, let me know otherwise I won't bother dragging all the stuff along.
I'll keep you posted if I'll be attending the meet! |

I used the bottle that comes on an SMC alky kit, 1/2 gallon. I drilled and tapped a fitting on the bottom for the hose, and another near the top for the air valve. I pour the mixture in, put on the top and then pressurize it with my compressor. There is a little more to it, but that's the basics. I can connect to standard fuel rail via the schrader valve or fancy rigs with -6 or -8an fittings. I also installed an on-off valve. The return fuel line needs to be clamped off, and the fuel pump unplugged.
I found a deal on a case of the TEC today. The name is slightly changed and the bottle is plastic instead of a metal can. The bottle has 16 oz. liquid, and the service bulletin says to run 32.4 oz. of the mixture thru per cleaning. Thats four cleanings per bottle. (4 oz TEC, 36 oz. fuel)
I did so on the Sy today and was pleased with the results. The 75# injectors are disc type and I didn't think it would really need it, but it DID make a noticeable difference. It didn't smoke, so the dillution keeps it mild, as in no oil change needed.
If you bring the Ty to Kens on the 7th, I will do yours for $25. You will do the return line and fuel pump, especially if it's raining. Hopefully Ken will let me borrow some compressed air.
Roland it sounds like a deal to me! I just need to convice the wife about me taking that trip over there? |
